Can I add students after the audition registration deadline?

After registration closes, you may no longer pre-register students for the audition.  Students will be allowed to audition the day of the provided that they are registered in an orchestra class and their teachers are present.  Students whose teacher is not present will not be allowed to audition.  Late-registration students will automatically be placed at the back of the audition line.

If I have a student that was registered and cannot make the auditions, can I send another student in his/her place?

No.  You may neither substitute students, nor switch audition numbers.

Do the auditioning students have to be enrolled in orchestra class?

Yes, the students must be enrolled in an orchestra class.

Can students audition on more than instrument?

Yes, but this is rare.  Teachers are requested to contact the auditions chair via e-mail if this circumstance comes up.

What are the requirements to audition for the CMS Honors Orchestra?

Students at all levels will prepare scales and a solo, and perform sight-reading.  Both Middle and High School will follow the NC Orchestra solo rotation with cuts to be announced at the inaugural Orchestra in-service each year.  Required scales and bowings will be discussed at the inaugural in-service meeting.

Do scales have to be memorized?

Yes. Middle School should slur four to a bow (except basses who slur two to a bow.)  Middle School students will play the minor scale and one of the two required major scales.  High School Students will be required to play all scales.

Are there guidelines for the sight-reading?

Middle School sight-reading is based on Grade III MPA music.  High School sight-reading is based on Grade IV-V MPA music.

Can the students use their own copy of the solo, or do they have to use the one provided for them?

Students may use their own copy.  We will provide a copy in the room, however, indicating cuts.

What do my students need to bring?

Students should bring all equipment necessary, including incidentals (such as extra strings, a tuner, etc.)  If a student needs to borrow a larger instrument, such as a cello or bass, please contact the Auditions Chair by e-mail at least 10 days prior to the event.

If I do not have any students planning to audition, do I still need to go to the auditions?

Yes, please!!!  We need every teacher possible to assist with judging and administration of the event.  This cuts down on the audition time and makes the audition process run smoothly.  Please send an e-mail to the Auditions Chair to let her know you are coming!

If I have a student make the orchestra, is there a cost for the Clinic?

Not at this time.
